It is the question we are asked more than any other: should I buy engineered or solid oak flooring? Both give you a real oak floor. The difference is in how the boards are built, and that difference decides how wide your boards can be, whether you can run underfloor heating, and how the floor behaves for the next twenty years. Here is the honest answer, from a team that supplies both.

The Difference in One Minute

A solid oak board is exactly that: one piece of oak, top to bottom. An engineered oak board has a genuine oak wear layer on top, bonded to a multi-layer timber core beneath. Once fitted, the two look identical, because the surface you walk on is real oak in both cases. The core is where engineered oak earns its keep: those cross-bonded layers make the board far more stable, so it barely moves as temperature and humidity change through the year.

Why Engineered Oak Has Become the First Choice

Stability changes what is possible. Engineered boards can be made wider and longer than solid boards without cupping or gapping, which is how the wide-plank look in modern interiors is achieved. Engineered oak is the only oak flooring we would recommend over underfloor heating. It suits kitchens and other rooms where humidity moves around. And with a generous wear layer, a quality engineered floor can be sanded and refinished in the future, just as a solid floor can. Where Solid Oak Still Makes Sense

Solid oak has heritage on its side. For the restoration of a period property, or where boards will be repeatedly sanded over many decades, solid timber remains a fine choice. Its limits are practical: boards need to stay narrower, it must be fitted with more allowance for movement, and it is not suitable over underfloor heating. If your heart is set on solid, we can supply it; we will simply be honest with you about where it belongs.

The Questions That Actually Matter

Once you have chosen engineered oak, four decisions shape the floor. The wear layer: thicker means more future re-sands, and a longer life. The grade: from clean prime grades to characterful rustic grades with knots and colour variation. The finish: oils feel natural and are easy to repair locally; lacquers are harder-wearing and lower-maintenance. And the format: plank for calm, contemporary space, or herringbone for heritage character.
