New Oak Herringbone Flooring: 23 Styles Just Added

Herringbone has been the floor of choice for grand houses for centuries, and it is just as at home in a modern open-plan kitchen today. We have just added 23 new herringbone floors to our range, from clean, lacquered engineered oak to tumbled solid oak that looks as though it has been down for a hundred years. Here is a quick tour of the new collection, and how to pick the right one for your home.

Engineered or solid oak herringbone?

The first decision is construction. Engineered oak herringbone has a real oak top layer bonded to a stable multi-layer base. It is less prone to movement than solid wood, and our new engineered blocks come with a 4mm or 6mm oak wear layer, so they can still be sanded and refinished in future.

Solid oak herringbone is oak all the way through. At 22mm thick, our new solid blocks can be sanded many times over their life, making them a true long-term investment, ideal for period properties and anyone who wants a floor that will last generations. Still weighing it up? Our guide to herringbone wood flooring goes into more detail.

Ready to live on: lacquered and oiled engineered oak

If you want a floor that is finished in the factory and ready to use as soon as it is laid, start here.

  • Lacquered, for easy care: Corbridge, Craster, Embleton, Otterburn. A sealed, wipe-clean surface that is ideal for hallways, kitchens and busy family rooms.
  • Oiled, for a natural matt look: Wooler, Belford, Chillingham. Oil soaks into the timber for a warm, natural feel, and worn areas can be refreshed locally.
  • Brushed for texture: Cragside, Ponteland, Elsdon. Brushing lifts the grain so you can feel it underfoot. Cragside is brushed and oiled in a soft Pinot Gris tone, while Ponteland and Elsdon are brushed and matt lacquered.

Unfinished engineered oak: make it your own

Unfinished blocks are sanded and finished on site once laid, so you can choose any colour or sheen and the whole floor is sealed as one seamless surface. Blanchland, Allendale are classic 70 x 350mm blocks in prime and rustic grade, while Felton, Bellingham are large 100 x 500mm rustic blocks with a thick 6mm oak wear layer, perfect for making a statement in a big open-plan space.

Solid oak herringbone, including tumbled finishes

Our new solid oak herringbone is supplied unfinished in three classic block lengths:

The tumbled versions are a highlight of the range. Each block is tumbled to soften its edges and corners, giving an aged, reclaimed character straight away. They are a brilliant way to get the look of salvaged parquet with the consistency of new timber.

For something different, Morpeth is a solid merbau herringbone: a dense, hard-wearing tropical hardwood with a rich reddish-brown colour.

How to choose: grade, finish and block size

Grade

Prime grade is clean and consistent, with only small, occasional knots, which suits contemporary interiors. Rustic and knotty grades show off natural knots and colour variation for a characterful, lived-in look. Standard and mixed grades sit in between.

Block size

Smaller blocks (70 x 230mm) create a tighter, busier pattern that suits smaller rooms and period homes. Classic 70 x 350mm blocks work almost anywhere. Long 70 x 490mm blocks, like Chillingham, Embleton, Elsdon and Otterburn, create an elongated zigzag that is lovely in hallways, and wide 100 x 500mm blocks make a bold statement in larger spaces.

Finish

Lacquer is the easiest to look after day to day. Oil gives the most natural look and can be spot-repaired. Unfinished gives you complete control over the final colour. Our article on herringbone vs straight-lay flooring can also help if you are still deciding on the pattern itself.

Want the herringbone look with less upkeep?

We have also added new luxury vinyl floors. Epping is a stick-down herringbone LVT with an embossed wood texture and a hard-wearing 0.7mm wear layer, so you get the parquet look with very little maintenance. For plank-style floors, take a look at our new rigid vinyl planks (Ashdown, Sherwood, Delamere, Hatfield) and slim stick-down LVT (Sherwood, Delamere) in our LVT collection.
